The general consensus is that good animation costs more than a small business can afford; now that could be true but it all depends on what you want, what you expect and where you go. If you're planning to knock on Pixar's door then it will cost you a small fortune, however, try knocking on some other animation doors and it could cost you less than $3,010 a minute (£2,000*).

Now there are animation companies out there that, to a small business, may seem like you're paying a Pixar price tag as the cost of the more complex, all singing, all dancing, jazz hands animation video can set you back up to $50,000 (£35,000). However, this doesn't need to be the case and it's more likely these prices would be put on an animation video for the big corporations like eBay and Houzz.

You're a small business, possibly a start up, therefore it stands to reason that the price tag for your  animation video would reflect this. Here I'll go through the approximate prices of different styles available to you, from us at Wyzowl. We'll base it on the factor that you're after a 1 minute 30 sec animation video (the perfect length) and we'll go through each style on offer to you.

1. Website Video -- Screen Recorded

This style of video basically involves taking a screen recording right from your website. It's really useful for your customers - and because it doesn't technically count as animation in the sense that there are no illustrative graphics - it is at the lower end of the budget scale and will set you back approx. $846.83 (£562.50) for a 1 minute 30 second video.

2. Mobile App -- Screen Recorded

Exactly the same process as the Website Video, mobile app previews are recorded directly from the mobile screen to demonstrate to your customer what your app does before they download it. Also exactly the same as the website video here is the price: approx. $846.83 (£562.50) for a 1 minute 30 second video.

3. Animated Without Characters

The animated without characters is a great style of video that is a very cost effective way to explain your product or service. This style helps you tell a story along with showing people what you can offer. It's created through tailor-made graphics that are edited together to give you the best animation possible and it doesn't cost you the earth. A 1 minute 30 second video would cost you approx. $3,376 (£2,242) which compared to a generic US competitor at the cost of $8,000 (£5,312) is a price you can be happy about.

4. Animated With Characters

A step up from the animated without characters this type of animation is really the best way to get your story across to your customer. This is because you can show your product and service from the customer's perspective and this really gets them relating to how it can benefit them. Again the graphics are all tailor-made and edited together to create your finished animation. This style of video starts at $4,505 (£2,992) for a 1 minute 30 second video and again if we compare it to our generic US competitor at $9,500 (£6,310) it's almost half the price but at a standard that you'd be more than happy with.

5. Videographic

This is effectively a moving infographic which is created using statistics, numbers and text. Videographics from us include animation, sound effects and video editing; we require the original infographic to be supplied. The price of a videographic at Wyzowl is approx. $3,376 (£2,242).

So what's next?

There you have it, all the styles of animation and an idea of the cost it will be to your small business. In the grand scheme of things the price of an animation video really isn't that much and in the long run the statistics show it can only do good for your business.

  • 50%-85% of customers are more likely to make a purchase after seeing an explainer video.
  • Many businesses have noted a 20% increase in revenue.
  • 4 in 10 shoppers visit online stores as a result of watching a video.

I suppose you could say the cost of not using an animated video could be more great to your business and can you really put a price on great content marketing?

In conclusion, animated video Short term cost -- Long term gain.
